Inside Athena: Evergreen C.N.A. Continues Education To Become A Nurse

STAFFORD SPRINGS, C.T. — Marler Walters wanted to do even more for her residents at Evergreen Health Care Center in Stafford Springs and knew the best way to do so was to continue her education.

The Jamaica-born L.P.N. joined the Connecticut center in 2020 after moving from New York City where she worked as a C.N.A. She was hired in the same role at Evergreen. Walters began working in healthcare in 2009 and recently graduated from Lincoln Technical Institute in New Britain with her Licensed Practical Nurse certificate.

“I wanted to do more to help. As a C.N.A. you can only do so much while as a nurse you can advocate more,” she said. “As a nurse, you get to see changes so you’re able to communicate that with the doctors.”

She said she loves her job because she gets to meet new people. The staff and residents at Evergreen feel like family to her.

Walters moved to America back in 2006 when she was almost 17 years old for a better life and more opportunities. Coming from another country, she said that has inspired and motivated her to work hard.

“It makes you a little bit more grateful for all the opportunities you have here because in Jamaica there’s not as much you can do, but here there’s so much opportunity,” she said.

“I just love working with these residents. I know I’m making a difference in their life,” Walters said.
